Matthaus emigrated from Württemberg, Germany in 1882 with two younger brothers, Georg and Peter. His surname was spelled "Wiedenmann" in Germany but became "Wiedenman" in the U. S. Some of his descendants, however, do use the surname with two n's.

While Matthaus settled in Iowa, brother Georg moved from Iowa to Kingsbury County, South Dakota and brother Peter to Bingham County, Idaho.

A record of Matt's naturalization on May 13, 1887 is at the Allamakee County, Iowa Courthouse.


MATTHAUS WIEDENMAN

DIED at his home southeast of town Aug. 28th, 1905, Matthaus Wiedenman aged 55 years 9 months and 7 days.

Mr. Wiedenman was born in Germany Nov. 21st, 1849 and came to America in March, 1882. On the 27th of March, 1886, he was married to Henrietta Zimmerman. Seven children were born to the union, three of whom died in infancy. Those who with the mother mourn the death of the husband and father are Frederick, Mattie, Annie and Charles. Two brothers of the deceased reside, one, George Wiedenman in South Dakota and one in Idaho; two sisters are in Germany.

The funeral was held on Thursday of last week, the 31st, at the Congregational church, Rev. Braun, of Farmersburg, and Rev. Grinnell, of this city officiating clergy.

Mr. Wiedenman was a member of the Yeoman, in which he carried a policy of insurance for $2,000, and also held an Accident Policy in a DesMoines Company.

Farming was his occupation at which he was quite successful, leaving the family in fairly good circumstances. His religious belief was centered in the German Lutheran congregation. He was popular with friends and neighbors, socially inclined.

His death was due to a complication of several ailments. His passing away in the prime of manhood is sincerely mourned by the family and personal friends.
