JOHN WIEDENMAN LAST RITES HELD

John Henry Wiedenman, 63, died Saturday morning, Oct. 30, at 9:30 o'clock after being ill since summer with cancer.

He was taken to the Decorah hospital when he first became ill for treatment and then to the University hospital at Iowa City, after which he was cared for by his brother Fred and family.

He was born Dec. 27, 1879 in Wurttemburg, Germany, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Matthaus Wiedenman. He came to America when 15 years old with his father and settled in Allamakee county. He worked in this community and later at Minneapolis, Minn. He followed blacksmithing by trade and was regarded a skilled workman in this line.

He is survived by two brothers, Fred and Charles of Monona; a sister, Mrs. Wesley Johanningmeier, of Davenport; and five nieces and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Funeral services were held at the Schultz funeral home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. R. C. Schlueter of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church officiating. Music was provided at the services by a duet, Mrs. Lydia Pufahl and Mrs. R. E. Wirkler, accompanied by Mrs. George Heins. Burial was in the City cemetery [Monona Cemetery].

Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased.

--From an original 1943 obituary

Note: Hank did not come to America with his father Matthaus (1882 arrival) as stated in his obituary but arrived at a later time (1894-1895). Hank's mother, Christina Margarete Birner (born in Langenau in 1844), was the first wife of Matthaus Wiedenman, 1849-1905; it is believed Hank's mother remained in Germany. --D. A. S. Granston
