James Leon (J. L. or Lonnie) Newman was born December 28, 1891 to Thomas Wiley Newman & Lou Burge Newman in Titus County, Texas, USA.

Sometime during his early childhood, his parents relocated to Oklahoma (believed to be Indian Territory - presumably to be close to Lou's parents). It is also believed that Thomas & Lou separated and Lou gave birth to twins, about 1900, or shortly before, and may have died in childbirth with these twins (their gender is unknown to this contributor at this time).

Thomas Wiley Newman traveled to Oklahoma and brought young Lonnie to live with him and his new wife and half-brothers and sisters in Texas.

Lonnie and Nevie separated and divorced sometime after 1934 and he was largely estranged from the children from this union. It is unknown to this contributor as to whether he remarried, or not, at this time.

Sadly, due to animosity in the family toward Lonnie, only one of his children attended his funeral when he passed away; I don't believe his children were familiar with any relatives on Lonnie's side of the family while they were growing up - except their Grandfather, Thomas Wiley Newman.
