Melvin Prater was born the eldest son of 10 children to Henry Clay Prater and Sarah Jane (Kenney) Prater in Pineville, McDonald, Missouri, USA on 4 Jan 1877.  Melvin was a farmer but he and his family were also involved in saw-milling and logging in southwest Missouri and Northeast Oklahoma since the early 1900's. 

Melvin Prater gained early experience as a logger in the forests of Oregon prior to moving his family east to Oklahoma.  He married Martha Belle Lynn in Pineville, Missouri on 18 Dec 1904.  Together they had 4 children Earl, Kenneth L, Robert T, and Irene M. 

Martha Belle passed away 29 Dec 1927 Wyandotte, Ottawa, Oklahoma, USA and is buried in the Seneca Cemetery.  He married the widow Myrtle Iva (Shanks) Maulding on 9 Jun 1929 in Neosho, Newton, Missouri, USA.  Myrtle had 2 children from a previous marriage: daughter Walta E Maulding, and son Dwight Maulding.  Myrtle is also buried in the Seneca Cemetery.

Melvin passed away in Delaware County, Oklahoma, USA on 22 Nov 1954 and is buried in the Seneca Cemetery in Seneca, Newton, Missouri, USA.
