John Bishop Prater was born 25 July 1891 in Lanagan, McDonald County, Missouri to parents Henry Clay Prater and Sarah Jane Kenney Prater. He was the 7th child of 10.

In his early 30s, he left farming and moved to Arizona to become employed by the gas company becoming a foreman by the age of 38 working there till retirement.

John married Sarah Janette Tracy in 1912 and together, they had 3 children, Sarah May (b. ca 1916 OK) , Winton Tracy (b ca 1918 OK), and Dixie Dean Prater (b ca 1920 OK). Stella passed away in 1933 and John married Emily V. Tanner in 1934. He has a stepson Alwin G. Bradus (b 1930 MS). John passed away in Apr 1985 in Tucson, AZ and is buried with his first wife Stella.
