James Dotrie Prater was born 28 Sep 1886 in Pineville, McDonald, Missouri, USA to Henry Clay Prater and Sarah Jane Kenney Prater and was the 5th child of 10. He received the Carnegie Hero Medal for an act of courage in 1911 for saving a young Indian boy from the bottom of a well and received a scholarship for his heroism. He used the scholarship to attend seminary school and became a Methodist minister which he made his life's work for 46 years. In 1909, he married Beulah Arnold and together they had 5 children, James Emery, Lawrence Arnold, Ruth M, Harold B, and Dottry Prater. His wife Beulah passed away in 1939 and on 16 Feb 1941, he married his second wife Thresa Brewer. He passed away in Joplin, MO 29 Jan 1967 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
