MOTHER SMITH

Louisa Jane Oliver was born February 4, 1840, in Illinois, died at Beaver City, Nebraska, September 18, 1916, aged 76 years, 7 months, and 12 days.
She moved with her parents to Trenton, Missouri, in her early womanhood. There she united in marriage to J. R. Smith, May 3, 1860. In 1878 she came with her husband to Clay County, Nebraska, remaining there one year, and then moved to Norton County, Kansas, settling near Almena. To this union were born ten children, seven boys and three girls, two of whom have preceded her to the great beyond, as also has her husband, he having passed away at Beaver City three years ago. Those remaining are one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Burt, of Thayer, Kansas, seven sons, Chas. O. Smith, of Colville, Washington; Joseph E. and Fredrick A. Smith of Beaver City; W. C. Smith, of Almena, Kansas, Albert R. Smith, of Electron, Washington; Edward S. Smith, of Selma, California, and James O. Smith, of Sumner, Washington; one brother, John Oliver, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, and one sister, Mrs. Adaline Lock, of Sumner, Washington. Olive, one of the daughters, died in infancy, and the other, Mrs. Loretta O. Wallen, died at Wilsonville thirteen years ago. Besides these there are forty-five grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren and many friends to mourn her departure.
She was converted in youth, uniting first with the Presbyterian Church and afterward with the M.E. Church and later with the New Light Church. She was a faithful and consistent Christian during all these years.
Mrs. smith had been a patient sufferer for many years, having a tumor of the back, for which she was operated upon for the fifth time, which resulted in her death. It was not thought to be a serious matter when she went to the hospital, on Sunday morning, September 17. She came out from under the influence of the anaesthetic and seemed to be doing well, but her heart began to fail and she passed away about 3 o'clock A.M. Monday.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church, Friday, September 22, conducted by Rev. C. E. Huff, of Oranoke, Kansas, an old friend of the family. The body was laid to rest in the family lot at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
