Obituary
John Rhoades Smith was born in Ohio, September 4, 1829. He was united in marriage to Louisa J. Oliver at Trenton, Missouri, May 3, 1860. To this union were born seven sons and three daughters. He served a year in the Civil War in the Missouri State Troops.
They moved to Norton County, Kansas, in 1879, being among the earliest settlers in what is now Harrison township, and lived there until about a year ago, when failing health made removal from the farm necessary. Since then his home has been in Beaver City, near two of his sons.
He was a member of the Methodist church from boyhood, until recent years, when he became a member of the Christian Church. He was an active Christian worker and a devoted husband and father.
Death came to him quietly on September 2, 1913, after a life span of 84 years lacking but two days. He leaves a widow, eight children, 43 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, with a multitude of friends, to mourn his death. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Thursday afternoon, September 4, conducted by Rev. Huff, of Norton, Kansas and interment was made in the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
