Youngest son of Matthias and Mary Magdalene Smith Harshman early settlers of the Western Reserve of Ohio. The family left Maryland in 1798. In the year 1800, according to Williams' History of Trumbull County, Ohio, Matthias moved his family westward into Washington Co., PA. In 1807 he had again moved westward, this time into the new state of Ohio and here his youngest son Andrew was born on Sep. 7, 1807.
