Dewey Lee Akin, 83, of Verona, Mo., passed away Sunday, October 4, 2009, at his home in Verona, Mo. Mr. Akin was born August 19, 1926, in Barry County, Mo., the son of William Fred and Ina Cordelia Hancock Akin. He was a cabinet maker. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Aurora, Mo. In 1982 he created Rocky Top Blueberry Farm in Verona, Mo., which is still family owned and operated. He married Ida Jessilyn Young on January 2, 1949, in Monett, and she survives. Additional survivors include: one son, Matt Akin, of Verona, Mo.; one daughter: Sandy Keith, of Ozark, Mo.; two sisters: Freddie Hemphill, of Purdy, Mo., and June Severance, of Long Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren: Angus Akin, Andrew Akin, Anthony Akin, Jim Keith and William Keith; and two great grandchildren: Lily Akin and Gabriel Akin. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Dean Akin, Herman Akin, Vester Akin and Howard Akin; and one sister: Pauline Hartsell. Services were held at 10 a.m. today, October 7, 2009 at Buchanan Funeral Home in Monett with Deny Lemaster officiating. Burial was in Purdy Cemetery, Purdy, Mo. Memorial may be made to Boy Scout Troop 48 in Aurora, Mo. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett. Mo.
