William Deines Dies -

William Deines, 94, probably the oldest resident of Clay Center, died Saturday in Hastings. He was a native of Russia and came to Clay county (sic) with his parents as a child of three years. He attended rural schools of the community and was affiliated with the Union Church. For many years he was a member of the board of directors and a consistent promoter of the Clay county (sic) fair. On retirement from farming he bought and sold livestock for many years, and had other business interests in the community.

Survivors are his wife, Alvina; sons and daughters, Roland of Hawthorne. Calif., Harold of Minneapolis, Minn., Willis of Harlingen, Tex., Mrs. H.J. Hoyt of Clay Center, Mrs. Otto Northrop of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Della Harrell of El Segundo, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He leaves also his brother and sisters, Dr. Dan Deines, Miss Mollie and Miss Anna Deines of Clay Center and Mrs. Mildred Swanson of Boise, Ida.

Services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the McLaughlin Chapel of Clay Center with Rev. Fred C. Gardner of Plainview officiating. Burial in Clay Center cemetery (sic).

William Dienes Obituary -

William Deines was born in Germany on Dec. 25, 1873 and passed away after a brief illness on July 6, 1968 at the age of 94. He was one of 12 children and was four years old when his parents made the journey from Europe to America and settled the family in the Sutton area, except for a few years in Fillmore county (sic). William lived the last 90 years of his life in Clay county (sic).

He attended rural schools and was affiliated with the Union Church of Clay Center. For many years he was a member of the board of directors and a staunch worker for the Clay county (sic) fair. He had been in the meat business for a number of years, was a farmer and a dealer in livestock for many years prior to his retirement.

He was an avid sports fan, widely known in horse racing circles from the years he owned and raced thoroughbred horses. He had a great sense of humor, a zest for life and a reputation for honesty and fair play that won him a legion of friends during his long and faithful life.

Survivors are his wife, Alvina, three daughters, Mr. H.J. Hoyt of Clay Center, Mrs. O.W. Northrop of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. John A. Harrell of El Segundo, Calif., three sons, Roland of Hawthorne. Calif., Harold of Minneapolis, Minn., and Willis of Harlingen, Tex., 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Dr. D.A. Deines of Clay Center, and sisters, Miss Mollie and Miss Anna of Clay Center and Mrs. Mildred Swanson of Boise, Ida.

Services were held July 9th at 10:00 a.m. at the McLaughlin Chapel in Clay Center with Rev. Fred C. Gardner of Plainview officiating. Pall bearers were six grandsons, Leo Northrop, Bill Hoyt, Max Northrop, Jack Northrop, Lowell Hoyt and Tommy Northrop. Burial was in the Clay Center cemetery (sic).
