From Holland St. John - "Joel was the son of Michael and Nancy (Clark) Jones and born on February 2, 1807 in Lincoln County, Kentucky just before his parents moved with other members of the Jones clan to Posey County, Indiana Territory. He was raised on the farm that his parents established north of the town of Mount Vernon and near farms worked by his brothers Wilson, Joel and David (my ancestor). Joel had five siblings: Phillis, Sarah, Samuel, Mary and Malinda. On May 5, 1842, at the age of thirty-five, he married Cara McCoy. By 1850 he has established a farm in Marrs Township, east of Mount Vernon which had a value of $800. Added to the family at this time were Caroline (7), Hezekiah (4), and Joel (1). Farming adjacent to his farm was his Aunt Rachel (Jones) Givens, a widow raising two granddaughters, and a cousin, Thomas Jefferson Givens. Little else is known about Joel and Nancy's family. He passed away on December 23, 1856 in Posey County and is buried in the "Joel Jones Plot" which is in Marrs Township. One source (Darlene McConnell's "Mission Accomplisted") gives the location of the gravesite as "out by the barn." It appears that the final resting place for Joel and his eldest daughter Caroline was just north and near the Samuel Jones Graveyard. The coordinates recorded by McConnell indicate Joel's homestead and Samuel's farm were in the same township, range and section."
