From Holland St. John - "Samuel was the son of Michael and Nancy (Clark) Jones, early settlers of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. He was born in December 25, 1815 most likely in Lincoln County, Kentucky before the family migrated and settled in Black Township, Posey County. Three census reports record that he was born in Kentucky. Samuel had one brother and four sisters: Joel, Phyllis, Sarah, Mary and Malinda. He married Malinda Nelson (born in August 13, 1818 in Tennessee) on December 24, 1837. After he married, it appears he established a farm in Lynn Township which is just north of Black Township. One source mentions that they had fourteen childen, and this source featured their son Thomas in a published biography. His father Samuel was described as "engaged in farming and stock raising." By 1850 Samuel (33) and Malinda (32) were farming in Lynn Township and had seven children. By 1860 Samuel was farming in Black Township. The census of that year lists him as forty-four, his wife Malinda forty-three, and the following children were living at home: William (17), Thomas (16), Missouri (13), Malinda (13), Sophiah (11), Perry (9), Margaret (7), Michael (6), Emma (4), George W. (4) and David (3/12). In 1870 the family was still on the Black Township farm and children listed as living at home included: Malinda (24), Sarah (20), Margaret (16), Michael (14), Emma (13), George (12) and David (10). The name Sarah listed as twenty most likely is the same daughter as Sophiah listed eleven in the 1860 census. The farm was valued at $7,200. Samuel passed away on April 24, 1872 and is buried in Dunn Cemetery, Posey County, Indiana. By 1880 Malinda was a widow, still living on the family farm, and living with her was her daughter Emma (24), son David (20), and Pernisse (7) who was her granddaughter. Malinda died on November 3, 1881 and is buried at the side of her husband. (This biography was revised on 6 Oct 2017 after discovering new information.)"
