A potluck memorial gathering will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec 2, 2003, at the Veterans of Foreign War Hall on Pine and Division streets. Interment will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Stub was born on November 21, 1924, in Wessington, S.D., the son of Peter and Selia (VanDenBerg) Verwolf. At a young age, he moved to Manhattan, Mont., and then as a teenager to Sandpoint, where he graduated from high school.
Stub served his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific aboard the USS Yakutab. Upon his honorable discharge in March 1946, he returned to Sandpoint and married Esther Becker on July 2, 1946, in Thompson Falls, Mont.
Stub worked all over the area, including in the mines in Kellogg and the Cabinet and Grand Coulee dams as well as the Alaska Pipeline.
He continued his logging business in his remaining years and took time to hunt and fish. He enjoyed his horses and especially loved the time spent with his family. He additionally enjoyed the time he spent with his friends having coffee at the Pastime and Connie's Café.
Stub is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther, at the home in Dover; four children, Steven Verwolf, Larry Verwolf, Vicki (Bob) Henry and Kari (Jim) Gage, all of Sandpoint; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Cornelia "Snip" Murchison of Smelterville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Stub was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jimmy, in 1973; a granddaughter, Katie Gage, in 2000; and his sister, Joan Cramer, in 2002.
Arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint.
