VETERAN RESIDENT DIES AT OAKLAND FOLLOWING ILLNESS
Albert Ast, resident of Reno for 35 years and a former member of the Reno Police Department, died Friday in the Oakland, Calif., veterans hospital. He had been ill for five months.
Mr. Ast, who lived at 1137 Arlington Ave., was 69 years old. He was a member of the police department for 15 years, leaving the department about 17 years ago. He was a brother-in-law of the late Jack Kirkley, former Reno police chief.
In recent years, Mr. Ast had worked as a carpenter.
He was a veteran of both the Spanish-American War and World War I, and was a member of the Darrell Dunkle Post No. 1 of the American Legion of Reno. Mr. Ast also was a member of Reno Lodge No. 597, BPOE, and held the lodge 25-year pin. He was a member of the carpenters union of Reno.
Mr. Ast is survived by his widow, Mrs. Florence Ast of Reno, and several brothers and sisters living in Iowa, Pennsylvania and California. He was born in Walnut, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the O'Brien-Rogers chapel with Darrell Dunkle post No. 1 of the American Legion in charge. Burial will be in the Veterans' plot in Mountain View cemetery.
