Thomas was born in Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland to Patrick and Mary nee Ward Brennan.

He came to the US abt 1884 and by 1890 was in Springfield, Illinois where he lived out the rest of his life. It is believed it was here he married Ellen Walsh abt 1888, however the marriage record eludes me. The 1900 census notes they were married 12 years.

Tom and Ellen raised at least 12 children all born in Springfield where they all married and continued to live. The known children are Beatrice, Mary C. "Mayme" Hagele, Bridget Theresa "Brassie" Esslinger, Patrick J., Ellen C. "Nell" Russell, Thomas Francis, Margaret C. "Maggie", Martin Edward, James William "Jay", John H., Elizabeth M., Francis Jerome and Jeannette B. (Utterback).

Thomas was a coal miner and worked at the Peabody Coal Co. from at least 1900 to 1932. He died at St. John's Hospital of Broncho-pneumonia and it is noted on his death certificate that he had a brain tumor.

Services were handled by LJ Berg-Kirlin-Eagan funeral home.
