By Doretta Gulbranson Gullickson:
Alfred Gulbranson was born in Riverview Township on October 9, 1880 to Thor and Thorine Gulbranson. He was born and raised on the Gulbranson Homestead that is located five miles west and six miles north of Flandreau. (It is presently owned by Ron Minor.) As an infant his mother died; he was cared for by relatives (Stena Johnston before she married Eri Coleman down the road, Stena was Thor's Niece) until his father marriage to Betsy Johansdatter (First Cousin of his mom, Thorine). Alfred had two brothers, Carl and Otto and two sisters, Inga who died in Houston, Minnesota and a sister Inga who lived in Iowa. He also had nine Half brothers and sisters: Thea, John, Clara, Conrad, Tilman, Edwin, Louise, Josephine, and Theresa. He received his education at both Smith and Coleman schools, which were located northwest of Flandreau.
On January 4, 1906 he married Ida Karoline Amundson at the North Prairie Church near Flandreau. Officiating the service was Rev. Carl Moen. Alfred met Ida of Tracy, Minnesota while she was working for her sister, Lizzie Olson, at Egan, South Dakota.
They started their married life by living on the John Ingvaldson farm northwest of Flandreau for fifteen years. (This farm is presently owned by Doyal Bitele). They then lived for two years in Aurora on the Carl Keck Farm. The Bill Davis farm north of Colman came up for sale. In 1919, Alfred purchased the farm where he lived for forty years until his death. (It is presently owned by Merle Gulbranson). Adding to his family and farming responsibilities, he served on the building committee of the Midway Lutheran Church, which was completed in 1924. He then became a Trustee of the church. Other responsibilities were services to the O'Brien School Board, Fremont Township Board, and the Colman Creamery Board.
Alfred and Ida had two children: Alton Ole Born September 25, 1907 and Doretta Betsy born October 18, 1910. Alton married Myra Stokes April 5, 1931. They had three children: Harold, Merle, and Karoline. Doretta married Marvin Gullickson February 22, 1931. They had twelve children: Irene, Dorothy, Margaret, Donald, Alvin, David, James, Edward, Lorraine, Mary, Thomas, and Darlene.
Alfred passed away at the age of 78 on April 22,1959 of cancer. Ida, his beloved wife, came to her eternal rest after 83 years of life on October 8, 1966. Their son, Alton, died June 27, 1969 of a heart attack at the age of 62; his wife, Myra, age 58, died August 21, 1970 of stomach cancer. All are buried at the Midway Lutheran Cemetery.
Reflecting back on my dad, I remember him to be a thoughtful man, always doing nice things for someone else. When it came to discipline, he was stern and meant what he said. Sundays were a day of rest, fun, and visiting; except for the rare occasions to cut grain at harvest time. Playing ball was his favorite sport and he loved to dance as young man. He believed in God and he never missed church. The most memorable holiday was Christmas, which was greatly celebrated on Christmas Eve at his home. A family program was always in order before opening gifts. This included the reading of the Christmas story from the Holy Bible. I am proud to say that this tradition is being carried on to this day. I am grateful for having known and been touched by this man......
