Russell was born the son of Copsley & Lizzie Gannon Clarke in Plymouth County, IA. He lived with his family on the farm until the age of eight years when they moved to Le Mars, IA; he attended elementary and high school there. In 1912, his family moved to Graham Lakes Township, Nobles County, MN. He helped on the family farm until 1917 when he entered the Army. During World War I he served in France and Germany. Upon his discharge in 1919, he farmed with his brother at Osakis, MN and later worked at the Post Office in Le Mars, IA. On June 10, 1924, he was united in marriage with Mary O'Brien in Le Mars. They made their home in Le Mars for two years, then moved to Kingsley, IA where they farmed until March 1931, when they moved to their farm in Graham Lakes Township, MN. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN and served on the Advisory Board of that church. He was a member of the Brewster American Legion for over 50 years and also served on the Graham Lakes Township Board for 35 years. He passed away at his home at the age of 79 years.

Russell & Mary are the parents of Orrin (Marilyn) Clarke of Fulda, MN and Donald Clarke of Brewster, MN; Mary Elizabeth (Robert) Michaels of Minneapolis, MN.

Russell's siblings include Harry Clarke, Raymond Clarke, Elizabeth (Kenneth) Wernli. He is preceded in death by siblings Mabel Wright, Melvin (Bertha) Clarke, Luella Clarke, & Florence (Donald)De Pree.

Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Brewster, MN March 31, 1975, Father Edward Scheuring officiating.
