Melvin was born in Kingly, IA (Plymouth County) the son of Copsley Earl & Elizabeth Maud Gannon Clarke. He had 7 siblings: Harry, Mabel, Russell, Luella, Raymond, Elizabeth & Florence.

Melvin was married to Bertha C Pinz in 1917 and together they had 1 child, Myron Copsley Clarke.

Melvin & Bertha farmed in ND & in Sauk Center, MN. In later years they lived in Marshalltown, IA and co-ran the Coast to Coast hardware store with his brother & sister-in-law, Ray & Marjorie Clarke. Mel & Bertha moved to Worthington, MN and Mel delivered gas for the Nobles County Oil company. Melvin & his wife passed away in Quincy, IL.
