Thursday at the age of 94 years and 11 days.
Daughter of David and Louisa Berkey, she was born Jan. 23,1888, on a farm east of Davenport. She graduated from
high school in 1905 and was baptized and joined the
Lutheran church in Davenport.
In 1907, she was married to Walter J. Bates, Carleton. To
this union were born Robert 0. of Laguna Hills, Calif., Duane A. of Hastings. Mrs. Don W. Miller (Eloise) and Walter J. Bates, jr., of Davenport, Mrs. Paul Lyons (Dorothy) and Marian Faye.
Besides her children, she is survived by 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bates resided on a farm west of Carleton until she and her husband retired and moved to Carleton. After her husband's illness, they moved to, Davenport.
She was a member of Eastern Star and the Methodist Church.
Mrs. Bates was able to remain in her home until
October, 1978, at which time she moved to the Bethedsa Care
Home, Edgar.
The Rev. C. J. Willis officiated at the services and
interment was in the Carleton Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were by Urbauer Funeral Home, Davenport.
