Walter J. Bates, the youngest child of Walter J. Bates and Olive (Berkey) Bates was born on the family farm southeast of Davenport, Nebraska on September 5, 1929.

He was baptized at the Methodist Church at Carleton, Nebraska.

He passed away on November 10, 2012 at Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron, Nebraska at the age of 83 years.

Wally attended country school, District 83, through the seventh grade. He next spent two and one half years attending school at Davenport. When his father had a farm sale in 1945, the family moved to Carleton and he graduated from high school with the class of 1947.

During high school Wally worked at Weddel's Store in Carleton, and for his cousins, the Smiths in southern Colorado. After graduation, he worked at Portwood's Store in Davenport for a short while. In October 1947, he started farming and planted sixty acres of wheat.

He enjoyed farming and farmed until 1986 when he moved to Wahoo, Nebraska and worked for a pork operation. After a few years, he moved to Hastings and worked for Hastings Pork and later for the Hastings Parks and Recreation mowing parks and ball fields until he retired.

Wally moved to Courtyard Terrace at Hebron in March 2011 and was happy to be back in Thayer County and closer to family.

Wally was married to Nola Bartling on February 26, 1950 at the Methodist Church in Carleton. Six children were born to this family, James Alan, Beverly Kay, Barbara Jo, Brenda Lee, Walter J. and Mary Clarissia. Eventually this marriage ended.

One of the things Wally enjoyed during his life was making kites. He learned to make kites as a young child and continued making kites for many children throughout the years. He also enjoyed celebrating the Fourth of July, buying fireworks for his family and later for his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading especially history, family gatherings and visiting with relatives and neighbors.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert Bates and Duane Bates; and his sisters, Marian Bates and Dorothy Lyons.

He is survived by his son, Jim of Leesburg, Virginia; daughter, Beverly (Don) Holtzen of Davenport; daughter, Barbara (Mark) Schardt of Hebron, daughter, Brenda (Dave) McCann of Omaha; son Wally (Lori) of Godfrey, Illinois; daughter Mary (Paul) Larkin of Liberal, Kansas; and his sister, Eloise Miller of Kearney.
