~0bit~Mary Ann Petro, 95, of Independence, formerly of the Troy Mills and Walker areas, died Tuesday, November 27, 2001, in Eastern Care Center, Independence, following a short illness. Services were held Friday, November 30 at the United Methodist Church, Urbana. Burial was in Troy Mills cemetery. Survivors include nephews Raymond Attwood of Center Point and Dale Attwood and Leonard Henderson, both of Cedar Rapids; nieces Beverly McVay of Urbana, Emma Adams of Nauvoo, Illinois, and Jayne Kline of California; and many great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Jim, George, Rupert, Roy and Albert; three sisters, Lena Jane (Toots) Attwood, Helen Harriet Clemons and Mabel Powell; and a special friend, Jay Partridge. Mary was born November 26, 1906, the daughter of John Edward and Lena Laabs Attwood, one of nine children, near Brookings, South Dakota. When she was 6 years old, the family moved by train to Troy Mills with their horses and machinery. Later, the family moved to the Attwood farm on the south edge of Troy Mills and she attended the Troy Mills School. On October 9, 1929, Mary married Frank Deditz at the First Christian Church in Cedar Rapids. They farmed together near Troy Mills. He died March 16, 1954. Mary started working as a nurse's aide at St. Lukes in 1953, retiring in 1968. On August 5, 1974, she married LeRoy Petro at the Methodist Church in Urbana. He died August 21, 1982. As a young married lady, Mary accepted the Lord as her personal savior in the Free Methodist Church in Walker, having been born again. She remained a devoted Christian through many trials and hardships. God has always been faithful to her. Mary touched the lives of many people with her kind and loving ways. We love her and will miss her.

~0bit~Friends here received word of the death of LeRoy Petro, 91, of Urbana, at an Independence hospital on Wednesday, July 21, 1982. He was married to Mary (Attwood) Deditz on August 15, 1974. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Urbana Saturday afternoon. Attending the services from here were Eva Miller, Merle McCright, Margaret Wright, Vera Strawman, Frances McCright, Darleen Schantz, Ruth Fiala and Isabel Diltz.
