JACOB WILLFORD ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS SELF SUNDAY

Jacob E. Willford, 75, well-known Sage township man, was instantly killed Sunday when he was struck by a charge from his 12-gauge shotgun. The accident occurred near his home, a mile west and a half mile north of Gladwin, about 11:30 a.m. Mr. Willford had left his house to shoot an owl that had been molesting his chickens, and was stepping across a fence when a protruding wire caught the gun and caused it to fire; the charge striking him in the head.
He was found by his daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Bellinger, who made her home with her father, when she went to call him to dinner. Mr. Willford was prominent in county affairs, representing his township on the board of supervisors for many years, and serving several terms as county road commissioner.
Mr. Willford was born in Whitehouse, Ohio, on February 19, 1872, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Willford. In 1893 he was married in Iowa, and he and Mrs. Willford came to live on the farm in Gladwin county 44 years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Gordon and Buryl, both of Gladwin; two daughters, Irma Thorington and Mrs. Gertrude Bellinger, also of Gladwin; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His wife and one son, Maurice, preceded Mr. Willford in death.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Reigle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sidney S. Rood of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Pallbearers were his six grandsons. Gladwin County Record dated 12-03/1947 Column - 8 Page - 1
