Mrs. Doris M. Austin, 35, wife of Ervin H. Austin Jr., died at 9:30 a.m. in the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, as she was being prepared for brain surgery. She had been struck shortly after 7 a.m. and was rushed to the Hagerstown hospital, after examination at the Waynesboro Hospital emergency room revealed the critical nature of her injuries. State police said the mishap took place four tenths of a mile west of Waynesboro. Mrs. Austin had started to walk to town to work when a neighbor, Kenneth Grinage stopped and offered her a ride in his car. She was struck by the right front of a 1964 Comet convertible driven by Miss Shirley Winters, 29, of 202 W. 2nd St., driving to work in Greencastle. Grinage went to a nearby farmhouse and summoned the ATH & L Ambulance.
