John Bennett, Jr.

John Bennett, Jr. son of John Bennett, Sr., met with a horrible death at an early hour Wednesday while on duty as a Monom brakeman at Cloverdale.

Bennett was breaking on an extra freight north bound and the train was running in on a siding when he was sent back to signal the passenger train that went north through here at midnight. He had flagged the train and nothing more was seen of him until the freight crew was ready to pull out, when Bennett was missed and his body found under a freight car on a switch where it had been hurled by the passenger. He was struck on the head and his skull crushed. No one saw the accident and how it happened may perhaps remain a mystery, though it is thought he stumbled and fell on the main track. It is likely that the body will be taken to Indianapolis for burial

Mr. Bennett was a brother of Otha Bennett of this city and formerly resided here. He was about 19 years old, unmarried and a young man of good habits. His parents Mr. and Mrs. John T. Bennett, reside in Indianapolis.

BRAKEMAN LOSES LIFE, BUT
SAVES PASSENGER TRAIN

John Bennett Sent Ahead to Flag
Flyer When Freight Fails to
Reach Switch

The body of John Bennett, a young brakeman who lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Bennett, 1221 East Market street, and who was killed on the main line of the Monon, near Cloverdale, Ind., yesterday, was brought to Indianapolis and taken in charge by McNeeley & Son, undertakers, last night.

Bennett died a hero by preventing a collision between a heavy freight and a fast passenger train. A few miles from Cloverdale is a long grade, difficult for freight trains. The breaking of a coupling prevented the freight train from reaching the top of the grade, where it was to take a siding to allow the passing of north-bound passenger train No. 4. Bennett's conductor sent the young man ahead to warn the passenger train of the danger.

The young man ran up the grade for a distance of about half a mile, and the fast train came around the curve so quickly that Bennett was caught. He was waving his lantern frantically, however, and the engineer of the passenger train applied his brakes and brought his train to a stop. Bennett was struck and his body mangled by the wheels. The body was place in the baggage car and taken to Greencastle, where it was placed on another train bound for Indianapolis. The passengers of No. 4 were unconscious of their danger. Bennett's body will be taken to Lebanon, Ind. For burial to-morrow afternoon.

FOR HERO'S DEATH

A Father Is Seeking $2000 Damages
From Monon Road.

ECHO OF JOHN BENNETT'S LAST RUN.

An echo of the tragic death of John C. Bennett, the young Monon brakeman who was killed last May at Cloverdale by the north bound night train, is a $3,000 damage suit against the Monon railroad, filed in the Monroe Circuit Court at Bloomington by the young man's father. The father, John Bennett, alleges that his son was braking on a south bound freight the night of his death and that the freight was due to take the siding at Cloverdale only a few minutes before the midnight passenger should arrive. He declares that when the freight "went dead" a mile and half out of Cloverdale, the engineer instructed Bennett to run ahead with a lantern and torpedoes to prevent a head-on collision with the passenger.

The story is that young Bennett, a boy of 18, ran the distance waving his lantern in the darkness. He could see the track stretching out before him and the steel rails glistening until he neared Cloverdale, where a sharp curve shut off the view from them. As he rounded this curve, some box cars on the siding still further shut off the stretch of track, and when he came around them the passenger engine was bearing down upon him. Because of his exhausted condition and the box cars in his way, he could not escape and was hurled to death by the passenger.

The complaint charges the Monon with negligence in having a defective freight engine and the box cars at the curve. It also asserts that there was not enough time allowed between the schedules of the trains.

Demands $3,000 Damages For
Death Of His Son

Asking for $3,000 damages for the death of his son, John C. Bennett, 18 years old, John A. Bennett, of Bloomington has filed suit against the Monon railroad. Bennett was a brakeman on the Monon in the freight service and his death occurred at Cloverdale, May 22 of this year. The train crew was just north of Cloverdale and young Bennett was sent back to flag the Chicago night express.

The complaint states that it was only a few minutes until the arrival of the express when the conductor gave the order to Bennett, and in order to get far enough down the track to signal the oncoming train Bennett had to run.

According to the complaint, in an exhausted condition, he reached a point near an elevator, and, as he was standing on the main track waiting for the passenger train, his view was partially obscured by the mill and a cut of box cars on a switch. Before he could get off the track he was struck by the engine and hurled under the box cars, dying instantly.
