SHERROW
FUNERAL FOR THREE VICTIMS
Bryantsville Fire Takes Lives of Crippled Boy, His Father and Grandfather
Three victims of a fire which turned their simple four-room farm home near Bryantsville, into a roaring inferno early Friday -- a crippled 10-year-old boy, his father who was burned to death attempting to rescue him, and his grandfather who sacrificed his life to carry the boy from the blazing home -- all were buried in a little Garrard County cemetery Sunday afternoon at Mt. Hebron Baptist church.
The crippled boy, Ray Sherrow, who died of burns Saturday morning at Good Samaritan Hospital;, Lexington, and the father, Jesse Sherrow, 40, who was found after the fire, lying on Ray’s bed, to which he had gone searching for the boy, were buried in one coffin.
The grandfather, Ben Sherrow, 72, who carried the child from the burning dwelling and who died of burns Saturday at the Lexington Hospital, was buried beside his son and grandson.
The fire started at the house, two miles north of Bryantsville on the Lancaster-Lexington pike, at 6 a.m. Friday when another of Jesse’s sons, J. C., 9, used kerosene in starting a fire in a kitchen stove, members of the family said. The resulting explosion spread flames thru the house and aroused members of the family all of whom fled to safety except the crippled boy.
