HESTER FRANCES BINGAMAN OVERTON
Mrs. Hester Frances Bingaman Overton passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. A. Fletcher, in Chariton, on Sunday, January 23, at 11:15 p.m. She had reached the age of 84 years, 10 months and 3 days. These years of her life had been led to the full.
Hester Frances Bingaman, daughter of Henry and Rachel Bingaman, was born at Oakdale in Monroe county. Her early life was lived in that community, together with her brothers and sisters and parents. Three brothers and three sisters have preceded her in death; two of her brothers survive her. They are: Lewis Bingaman of Columbia and Johnny Bingaman of Dallas.
On December 30, 1878, she was united in marriage to Charles Henry Overton. To this union three children were born, Merrill P. Overton, of Des Moines; Mrs. G. A. Fletcher, of Chariton; and Mrs. Nellie M. Byers, who preceded her mother in death.
Early in her married life, together with her husband and two children, traveled by covered wagon and ox team to Nebraska and took a four hundred acre homestead. In this frontier country they spent nearly six years, braving the many hardships of pioneer life. They returned to Monroe county, Iowa and resided there until 1919 when they came to Chariton, and this place had since been her home.
On Nov. 9, 1924, Mr. Overton passed to his reward and since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. G. A. Fletcher, of Chariton.
She leaves to mourn her passing a son and daughter; two brothers; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Also a host of other relatives and friends.
Early in her life Mrs. Overton was converted to Christ at the Methodist church in Oakdale. of which she was a member. Later, she accepted the way of Holiness and lived a deeply spiritual life. She was devoted to her God, whom she had found "a present help in time of need. She leaves behind her a life of Christian influence that will continue to be a benediction to all her loved ones and friends.
She became a member of the Church of the Nazarene some twenty years ago and enjoyed the fellowship of the church and was counted one of the faithful members of that organization.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. G. W. Hrnriksen, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, were held at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the Miley funeral home. Mrs. Harold Keeney and Mrs. Lavon Keeney sang appropriate selections. Burial was in the Oakdale cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ed Phipps, Harley Keeney, Harold Keeney, Rex Stout, Hazel Morton and Paul Wright.
