Delbert "Babe" Orville Banning of Independence, KS, died Friday, August 28, 2009, at his home. He was 80.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at Mt. Hope Cemetery under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel. Rev. Michael Adam will officiate.

Friends may call to pay respects on Monday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m.

The son of Lonzo Abram and Veora Allison (Jackson) Banning, he was born June 26, 1929, near Elk City, KS, in Chautauqua County. He received his education in rural school in Elk County, KS.

On January 14, 1948, he was united in marriage to Gloria Ferguson in Artesia, New Mexico. She preceded him in death in June of 1996.

Mr. Banning retired as a maintenance man for Hackney and Sons in 1995.

He was a honorary member of American Legion Post 139.

Survivors include one son, Randy Banning of Independence, KS; two daughters, Tori Robinson and Debbie Dye, both of Independence, KS; one step-daughter, Patti Sandborn of Independence, KS; three brothers, Martin (Bud) Banning of Tyrone, OK, Cecil Banning of Hesston, KS, and James Banning of Johnson, KS; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert; and one sister Jean Webber.
