He was born in Utica, July 11 1903 son of the late Thomas and Mary Lynch Barry. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Assumption Academy. On November 6, 1928 Leo married Bertha Tritten in Utica. For over 28 years Leo was a Utica firefighter. He was appointed to the department on July 1, 1928; promoted to Lieutenant in December of 1935 and was then promoted to Captain and Chief Inspector of the Bureau of Fire Prevention in 1938. In 1942 Leo was appointed to Assistant Chief and in 1943 to Chief until his retirement in 1966. After retiring from the Utica Fire Dept. Mr. Barry was an Executive Assistant to the NY Board of Fire Underwriters for six years retiring in 1972. He was a member of Blessed Sacrement Church, Utica. He was also a member of the international Association of Fire Chiefs and the NY State Association of Fire Chiefs and a past Oneida County Fire Coordinator. He was Chairman of the Oneida County Fire Advisory Board from 1941 to 1951 and a member of Engine #11. Mr. Barry was the chief organizer of the Oneida County Mutual Aid System. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #189, the Blessed Sacrement Holy Name Society, a member and past President of Central NY Heart Club and was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Utica Rotary Club.
Besides his wife, Bertha, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law Richard and Marilyn Bremer of Utica; two sons and daughters-in-law Leo C. and Patricia Barry of Utica; William J and Mary Lou Barry of Whitesboro; also two sisters-in-law Mrs. James (Mary) Barry and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Tritten, also of Utica. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Friday morning, May 13, 1983 at 9:15 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd, North Utica and at 10 o'clock at the Blessed Sarcrement Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Friends may call at the funeral home, 408 Herkimer Rd, Wednesday evening from 7-9 and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9. In lieu of flowers friends wishing may contribute to the Oneida Heart Fund or the St Elizabeth Heart & Lung Fund in Leo's memory.
