James Thomas joined the 1st Regiment of US Volunteer Texas Cavalry for 2 years as a Private during the Spanish American War. His enlistment date was June 18, 1898, at Fort Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas.
Information from grand daughter: James (nickname Pampa) lived for a number of years in Alvin. For 15 years he worked as a depot Agent in Duke, Texas. He was in Galveston during the great flood of 1900. As a telegraph operator Pampa sent the news of the flood and was one of the last to leave the island.
James and his first wife, Mary, were married in about 1903. They are enumerated on the 1910 US Census for Fort Bend County, Texas in 1910. James states that his next of kin is wife, Mary Roberts on his WWI Draft Card on September 18, 1918. Sometime before 1920 James and Mary divorced. James Thomas Roberts is enumerated on the 1920 US Census for Harris County, Texas as divorced, in the household of his father-in-law, William J. McCristal.
James second marriage was to Sue Sheffield Sirman on January 7, 1920 in Houston, Texas, marriage record #39766. James and Sue raised her two sons, Hugh Phillip Sirman and Vernon Elmer (Jack) Sirman and their one child, a daughter, Jimmie Lee Roberts, born on January 20, 1922. This was a wonderful, lifetime marriage.
Another comment from granddaughter: "When Pampa and Grandmother were married he was employed by the American National Insurance Company.
When his health failed the family moved from Goose Creek to Houston to live at 1346 Harvard. It was at this home that my first memories are of Pampa crossing the street to go to the Christian Science Reading Room that was located directly across the street from the lovely orange brick home.
Pampa's favorite pastimes were playing cards and dominoes. He delighted in giving a nickname to each and everyone."
James Thomas lived in Houston for 30 years where he was an insurance salesman and a member of the Baptist Church. He lived close to the family of his brother, Joseph Marion Roberts and other relatives. Both of his stepsons were active in the United States Military during World War II. James and Sue's daughter Jimmie Lee married and had 4 children.
James died at the age of 77 and is buried next to his beloved wife, Sue, in a large family plot at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
