Benjamin was a farmer in Neersville whose property was assessed at $5,000 in 1860. In 1859, Benjamin served in the 56th Virginia Militia activated to put down John Brown's rebellion in Harpers Ferry. Two years later, he voted for secession and suffered $1,000 damage during the burning raid. He married Jane Blackhouse and they had ten children between 1847 and 1865.
