John Curtis was a Waterford farmer who lived next to his brother Ebenezer on Beaverdam. However, unlike his brother, Curtis voted in favor of leaving the union and both of his sons who were old enough joined the Confederate Army. Curtis lost $1200 during the 1864 burning raids and his property was assessed at $35,000 in 1870.
He married Harriet Hough and had six children before she died. He remarried to Rachel A. Lochen in 1846 and had five additional children.
