William was a farmer in Loudoun County who also served as a County School Commissioner in 1846. His farm was assessed at $14,000 in 1850. In 1807 he married Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of George and Eve Smith. They had ten children.

William voted against secession in 1861 but lost two sons in the Confederate army. He also suffered $1,000 damage during the burning raid.
