John, a son of Ebenezer and Mary Grubb, was a Neersville farmer whose property was assessed at $18,350 in 1860. In 1837, he married Elizabeth Shriver and they had ten children.

In 1861, John voted against secession but lost a son in the Confederate army. He also suffered $1,000 damage during the burning raids. When Virginia established a free school system in the early 1870s, John deeded land in Neersville to build a school.
