John Millard Grubaugh was born in 1902 in Perrysville to Chalmer Franklin Grubaugh and Effie Ann Eddy. He was the oldest of their 8 children. He served in the First World War even though he was underage when he enlisted. He was injured during the conflict. He married Josephine Louise Meeting on 28 Jan 1930 in Mansfield, Richland, OH. They had 10 children, all surviving to maturity.
John was injured in July 1935 when working as a helper for a house mover. John was on the roof on the house clearing what he thought were telephone wires so that the house could be transported along a street. It turns out that the wire was a live electrical wire and John was severly burned across his back. For days he was treated in the hospital while hovering near death. He survived, but was significantly disabled for the rest of his life. He sued to Ohio Public Service for not properly identifying the live line, but the company was acquitted of any negligence. It was a struggle to support a family of ten children without a regular job and eventually the family was split up with the younger children being either adopted or sent to live in foster homes.
