Funeral services for Thomas BEARPAW, Sr., 74, Tahlequah, were held Monday, July 6, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Andy GONZALES and Maxie THOMPSON officiating. Interment followed at the Tyler Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charlie SOAP, Walter SOAP, Leroy SOAP, Albert SOAP, Jimmy SOAP and Carl SOAP, Honorary pallbearers were James T. BOLTON, Boyd HAMBY, Henry SOAP, Jack GOSS, Gene SOAP, Johnson SOAP and Norm FISHER.

Mr. BEARPAW was born September 18, 1923 in Adair County, the son of Stand Watie and Sally SOAP BEARPAW, and he died July 2, 1998, in Tahlequah.

Mr. BEARPAW attended Peavine Schools.

Thomas was a veteran of WWII, serving as a U.S. Army Darby's Ranger, and was a Cherokee Nation police officer from 1974 to October of 1993, when he retired.

Thomas married Josephine CHRISTIE in August of 1949. Out of this union were born four sons and four daughters (also 33 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren)--George, Stand Watie, Thomas Jr., Betty and Mary, all of Okla., Stanley and Sallie, both of Wyo.

A daughter, Roseann, his parents and grandparents preceded him in death.

He later married Mae Guess CRITTENDEN on September 1, 1964 in Pryor. They had one son, Jonathan and two granddaughters.

Other survivors include: one half-brother, Dennis; three half-sisters, Virginia and Billie, both of Okla. and Bonnie of Kansas; 31 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many relatives, as well as a host of friends and loved ones.
