Kathleen Young, 71, of Humboldt, Kansas, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

She was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to Stand Watie and Maybelle (Hogner) Bearpaw.

She grew up in Tahlequah and graduated from Tahlequah High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Business from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

On May 31, 1963, she married Charles S. Young in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

She taught school two years at Madras, OR, taught briefly at Chilocco Indian Reservation in Oklahoma and retired after teaching 23 years at Humboldt High School.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Humboldt, KS, a board member of the Housing Authority in Humboldt, she belonged to American Baptist Women Association, Mary Martha Church Circle, Sunflower Quilter's Guild, and taught Sunday school for many years.

She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and was a creative scrapbooker and avid quilter.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Charles; her son, Anthony Young, of Pittsburg, KS; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Jeff Fitzmaurice, of Humboldt, KS, and Karen and Brian Cornish, of Olathe, KS; five grandchildren, Garrett Fitzmaurice, Jordan Young, Kassidy Young, Taylor Fitzmaurice, and Kindahl Young; a sister, Virginia Jones; a brother, Dennis Bearpaw, of Tahlequah, OK; an aunt, Betty McKeever, of Pacific Palisades, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Adam, Charles, and Tom Bearpaw; and a sister, Billie Sue Blower.

Funeral will be Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Humboldt. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt, Kansas.

Contributions to the Kathleen Young Memorial Fund to be designated for educational purposes may be left in care of the funeral home.

Penwell-Gabel Humboldt Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
