Fire Thought to Be Caused by Burning Cigar Causes $2,000 Damage to Westhaven

Tuesday about 3:25 p.m.. the fire alarm concerning Westhaven was called to the central office by mrs. A. B. Moore of the Moore Travelers' Aid filling station, just across the street north. The Savannah fire department responded quickly to the northeast corner room on the second floor and then, also, the third floor room on the south where they found the body of Harry Leeson, age 38, was on the floor by the side of the bed.

Mr. Leeson had returned from George Newland's sale with C. M. Vetter (? spelling) at 13:30. He said he intended to go to his room and take a bath. The witnesses Everett Powell and O. C. Cobb saw the naked and charred body. He had evidently opened the door to the hall and the blaze and smoke suffocated him and he fell to the floor burned and black with smoke.

The damage to the property has been estimated to be around $2,000 and is covered by insurance.

There was a gasoline iron in the room where the fire started in the second floor but the occupant of the room gave assurance that the gasoline iron had not been _____and this was the assurance of Mrs. Ed. L. West, the owner and occupant, who was in the house at the time of the fire.

The ambulance and the coroner, Dr. Clifford L. Steidley, were called. The official report is the record that death was caused by suffocation from smoke and fire. Those who should know seem to think the fire was caused by a cigarette left burning in the room where the window was up and the wind blowing.

Below are the names of the member os the Savannah Volunteer Fire department who responded so quickly and discharged their duty so aptly by getting out the fire while it was small and thus preventing a conflagnation with its property damage and loss of valuable water. Commendations is due_____ as well as the early call of Mrs. Moore. These are the firemen: J. O. Trapp, Fire chief, W. G. Mack, O.G. Cobb, Walter Coyle, Albert Geoff and extras were John Herbert, Everett Powell, Ernest Heir, and Orville Lansing.

Funeral services for Mr. Leeson were held yesterday September 14, 1939 as the Breit Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. Frank J. Ma___ pastor of the Savannah Methodist Church and burial was at the Daily Cemetery with his family in attendance. He is served by his parents Mr. and mrs. George Leeson, Union Star; four brothers, J. W. Leeson, Detroit, Michigan; Carl and Leroy Leeson of St. Joseph, and Tommy Leeson of the home, two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Ables, Savannah, and Mrs. Dorothy Coy of B-------.

He had never married and had no children.
