ABRAHAM KERN is a native of the town of New Berlin, born Dec. 20, 1846. His father, Jacob Kern, was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, and came to the United States when he was twenty-one years of age, coming directly west and settling in the town of New Berlin in 1843. The journey across the ocean occupied forty-five days. The mother, whose maiden name was Catherine Damon was also a native of Germany, and was about twenty years old when she accompanied her parents to this country, seventy days being spent on the ocean. The marriage was solemnized in New Berlin, and 40 acres in section 18 purchased as the homestead. At the time of his death the father owned 174 acres, which was divided between Peter, Henry and a younger brother who is now deceased. There were in the family eight children --- six sons and two daughters --- Abraham being the oldest. Six of the children are now living. The forty acres on which Abraham has lived for the past twelve years belongs to the estate of his uncle, Abraham Kern, for whom he was named, and upon the death of Mrs. Kern will revert to the nephew. Besides this he owns 127 acres in the town of New Berlin. His political support is given to the Republican party and he has served as supervisor. At the present time he is a director and the treasurer of the Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company of New Berlin. His marriage occurred on Dec. 2, 1869, to Miss Christine Stern, daughter of Henry Stern of Waukesha township, where the daughter was born and reared, the parents being among the early settlers of that community. They have had a family of nine children, of whom all except one are living, and all were born in New Berlin. In the order of birth they are Catherine, now Mrs. Albert Wehren, of New Berlin; William; Henry; Minnie, Mrs. Frank Thomas; Henrietta Frederika, deceased; Rose, Mrs. Henry Bischoff, of Milwaukee; Charles; Louis, a graduate of Carroll college; Lydia, residing at home. William also spent two terms in Carroll college.
