CASHMERE - Bertha H. Schmidt, 90, a resident of Cashmere for the past 55 years, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 1996, in Colonial Vista Convalescent Center in Wenatchee.
She was born Feb. 27, 1905, to Henry and Louise (Ottmar) Hoefner in Adams County, Wash., and grew up and began her early education in Ruff, Wash. When Bertha was 8-years-old, her mother died and she quit school to care for a younger sister. Later she worked on several ranches in the area doing domestic and farm work. On Dec. 23, 1922, she married Ben Schmidt in Waterville, and they continued to live in Ruff. In 1941, they moved to Cashmere where they purchased a farm and replanted part of it to orchard and raised livestock on the other portion. During this time, she worked seasonally in the Union Packing Warehouse, now Blue Star, for over 40 years, retiring in her late 70s.
Mrs. Schmidt was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass., and the First Church of Christ Scientist in Wenatchee.
Survivors include three sons, Vernon of Wenatchee, and Larry and Harry, both of Cashmere; four daughters, Cora Faulkner of Wenatchee, Nora Phillips of Monroe, Hope Chamberlain of Yakima and Vera Long of Kirkland; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in 1958, one son, Hollis, in 1978, five brothers and one sister.
