MEMORIAL SERVICE HELD FOR MRS. PATSY RYAN

A very beautiful and appropriate memorial service was held in the Presbyterian church of Quilcene Sunday morning for Mrs. Patsy Ryan whose death had come as a shock to the community the preceding Wednesday. As the remains were taken to Cashmere for burial. Rev. J. Pate, pastor of the Quilcene church of which Mrs. Ryan was a member, held the memorial services as a tribute to her. Mrs. Anna Stevens, secretary of the Ladies' Aid of the church, read her obituary, with resolutions of condolence from both church and aid, also a beautiful poem to her memory, written by Mrs. Winifred Jones of Trout Lake, daughter, of Mrs. E. A. Reed.

The song "Saved by Grace" was sung especially to her memory.

Still trying to locate burial location of second spouse, John Ryan.

J. C. Ryan, 99, Succumbs at Nursing Home

J. C. "Jack" Ryan, longtime resident of the Quilcene, died at 9:20 am Wednesday at the Lagoon Nursing Home. Had he lived until June 15 he would have been 100 years old.

The time of the funeral for Mr. Ryan will be announced by Stroud's Chapel.

Mr. Ryan, who didn't retire until he was 88 years old, was known far and wide for his vigor. For years, even when in his 90's, he was a familiar figure at various gatherings. Because of his love for dancing, a special dance was held on his honor - with him one of the most active participants - on his 90th birthday.

He had been failing health in recent years and celebrated his 99th birthday quietly with friends last June.

He always gave as his formula for longevity: "Having a good time and getting the most out of life."

Mr. Ryan, known affectionately as "Dad," was born in Manitowoc, Wisc., June 15, 1857, and came to Washington as a 30-year-old logger in 1887. He specialized in log rafting and believed he was the first man to take a log raft down the Duwamish River, Seattle.

He spent from 1897 until 1917 in Alaska, enjoying the vigorous life in the north country but finally "coming out" because of his first wife's health. He since was twice widowed an once divorced.

After logging in Washington until 1933 he worked on his former 80-acre place at Quilcene.

He rafted his last boom for McCormick lumber company when he was 76 and then worked at clearing his place at Quilcene. When that was done he went to work on highway jobs and was active in bridge construction and other work along Hood Canal.

During the second world war he came out of semi-retirement to do his bit for the war effort. He quit one shipyard job as watchman because "it was too easy," and then worked 25 months in the Navy shipyard at Bremerton. While there he was run down by a transit bus, suffering severe fractures and other injuries.

Doctors were doubtful of his chances of survival when they learned he was 88 years old, but he recovered and walked out of the hospital five weeks and two days after he was injured.

On of his ambitions was to reach the century mark - which he missed by less than four months.
