Grandma passed away on December 26, 2008 surrounded by her family at the Rosebud Medical Center.
She was born May 11, 1926 to Elmer & Nancy Sample on the Curtis Homestead between Slaughter House and Rosebud Creek outside Forsyth, Montana. She was the ninth of twelve children. She attended the Cross School until she was six when the family moved to the Hardy ranch on Armelles Creek. She then attended the Paul Jones school until the seventh grade.
Grandma spent her time helping on the family farm, working beets and cooking for area farmers until 1945. She married Francis Charles Schmidt, "Schmitty" on November 6th, 1945. She worked a variety of jobs, including cleaning homes, waiting tables and a cashier at Jack's IGA and The Trading Post, from where she retired. Grandma loved her garden and her crafts. She and Grandpa lived their married lives in Forsyth.
Grandma is survived by her children Walter Schmidt of Anchorage, Alaska, George (Diane) Schmidt and Rita (Bill) FitzGerald, all of Forsyth. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and her sisters Eva Lasater of Forsyth and Margaret "Shorty" Shrimplin of Buffalo, WY and her companion since Grandpa's death, Matt Dillon the cat.
Grandma was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Francis "Schmitty". Also, by her parents and her three brothers Art Sample, Bert Sample and Alex Sample and six sisters, Edna "Bigfoot" Flanagan, Evelyn Sample, Opal "Jones" Landreth, Ethel "Skinny" Byerly, Elsie "Squirt" Hein and Elma "Peabod" Rogers, and her grandson, Mick FitzGerald.
We will miss you deeply, but we cherish the time we were blessed with. May you rest now and give Grandpa and Mick a kiss for all of us.
