Hjalmer's parents, Andrew and Ida Herberg, were from Smaland, Sweden and settled in Almelund, Chisago County, MN. Hjalmer was one of 14 children. He registered for WWI in June of 1917. On March 30, 1918, he married Ella Rud. Hjalmer had a small farm in Amador Township and at one point owned a threshing machine. They had two children, Fern and Wayne. Hjalmer was diabetic and died in 1929.
