Thelma E. Hawkins, age 98, former resident of Carleton Ave., Shelby died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Lyvonn Fisher in Shelby.

Born July 6, 1910 in Pike County, Kentucky to Alex and Sally (Bartley) Gibson, she had been a Pike County resident the majority of her life moving to Shelby in 1979. She was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church since 1950 and the United Baptist Church on Broadway since moving to Shelby in 1979. A homemaker, she enjoyed crocheting and quilting and serving her Lord.

Survivors include three sons, nine daughters, 50 grandchildren, 118 great-grandchildren, 60 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlen Hawkins in 1992; one son, Raymond Hawkins, one daughter, Gladys Cole; five brothers and eight sisters.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 3, 2009 from the United Baptist Church on North Broadway, Shelby. Rev. Arthur J. Hale, church moderator, will officiate with interment in Oak Grove Memorial Park, Lexington, Ohio. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Home and Public Health and the Area Agency on Aging Passport Program.
