Essie P. (Gibson) Stafford McPherson, 88, of 1150 W. Michigan Ave., Marshall, died Wednesday, July 1, 1992, in Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall.

Mrs. McPheson was born Sept. 6, 1903, in Ashcamp, Ky., to Alex and Salley (Bartley) Gibson.

She came to the Marshall area in 1960 and was formerly employed by William E. Morgan Medical Care Facility and at the Marshall Public Library.

She and her husband did custodial work for First Presbyterian Church. While in Kentucky, she was employed by a clothing factory.

She served as secretary of the auxiliary of the Free Will Baptist Church in Hallie, Ky., and attended the Marshall Church of Christ.

She enjoyed making quilts, sewing and making her own clothing.

Her first husband, Fred Stafford, died in 1967. Her second husband, Jesse McPherson, died in 1987.

Surviving are daughters, Dorothy Evanoski of New Jersey and Kathy Jarvis of Marshall; sons, Johnny Bartley of Jenkins, Ky., and Fred Stafford Jr. of Newell, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; two great-great-granchildren; sisters, Murtle Hopson of Pontiac, Virnie Stacey of Elkhorn City, Ky., Opal Moore of Virginia, Alphia Ownes of Kentucky, and Thelam Howkins of Ohio; and a brother, Alex Gibson Jr. of Pontiac.

She was preceded in death by daughters, Christine Stanley and Pearline Gregerson; sons, Franklin and Raymond Stafford; four grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers.

Visitation: Until 9 p.m today at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Marshall.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday in Marengo Village Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley W. Day officiating.
