Funeral Held For John James Marrs
Funeral Services for John James Marrs, aged 92, who died at his home here about 9:30 p. m. Friday, were conducted at the Presbyterian church at 2:30 p. m. Sunday at the Presbyterian church (sic), by the Rev. F. J. Stowe,
pastor.
Six grandsons, J. O. Wilson, Joe Hill and James Hill of Harrison, Herbert and Eugene Andrews of Little Rock and Charles Marrs of Cane Hill, served as pallbearers. Burial was made in Maplewood cemetery.
Mr. Marrs was born near Fayetteville, October 8, 1839. He went to Texas with his parents for a few years, but returned to Arkansas with them and spent most of his boyhood and later manhood in Washington and Benton counties, coming to Harrison in 1900 where he has since resided. He was a Confederate veteran.
He was converted and accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour at the age of 14 years, united with the Free Will Baptist church in 1879 at the age of 40 years, transferring his membership to the Presbyterian church in 1900 upon coming to Harrison. To Mr. Marrs religion was a serious reality. He had deep, abiding faith; the Bible was the authority of last resort in all the conduct of life. In his younger days, he was active in the service of his Lord and Master, through the church of which he was a member.
His wife, Mrs. Nancy Marrs at the age of 89 years and seven months, preceded him to the better land by almost four months. During the last few years the wedding
anniversaries of Mr. and Mrs. Marrs have been occasions for family reunions here. Slightly more than two years ago, the couple celebrated their seventieth anniversary, and last November, a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Wilson observed their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Marrs leave behind to mourn his loss four sons, N. L. Marrs of Chicago, Ill., S. B. Marrs of Norman, Okla., J. F. Marrs of Harrison, and the Rev. S. E. Marrs of Cane Hill; seven daughters, Mrs. W. A. Carlton of Harrison, Mrs. A. B. Wilson of Green Forest, Mrs. W. G. Clark of Harrison, Mrs. J. H. Jones of California, Mrs. William Murphy of Norman, Okla., Mrs. J. W. Hill of Harrison
and Mrs. A. B. Andrews of Little Rock. One child died in infancy. There are living 38 grand children and 31 great grand children.
