After Dessie was born, her mother was ill and could not care for the family. Obedience "Biddie," the oldest and just 15 years old herself, took on the responsibility of caring for the family and the household. Aunt Josie commented that she wasn't much help, though I heard differently from others. My great-grandmother, Frances, also stepped up and helped, though she was only 10 years old. When the family left Nebraska and went back to Arkansas, it was hard for them to leave their baby behind. She is even mentioned in both of her parents' obituaries which was not a common practice in the 1930's. Adjectives I often heard used to describe her were sweet, happy, and good. When listening to the stories, I always pictured her as being the bright light in the dark (hard) days of the family's time in Nebraska. Little Dessie was much loved and was never forgotten.
