OBITUARY: for SAMUEL "CASEY" VEACH HANES
Casey a resident of Downers Grove for over 60 years, died on Friday June 2nd of pneumonia. He had been in good health until May 6th, when he had a stroke. He was born 16 Nov 1907 in Papineau, Illinois; a son of the late David and Nancy (Moore) Hanes. Casey was retired from a lifetime of employment with Commonwealth Edison. He married on 26 Jun 1940 in Toledo, Ohio to Kathryn "Cappy" Ruth McCaffrey (daughter of the late William and Martha McCaffrey). Cappy and Casey were married for over 61 years, when she was called to ‘Cross the Bar'. They were always smiling like newlyweds and every excursion was another honeymoon. Their home was always open to family and friends. Casey opened his billfold without hesitation when he saw a need. After the death this past December of Casey's 102 year old brother, David "Buck" M. Hanes, Casey became the senior head of the Hanes extended families. Casey's big smile and quiet ways will long be missed. His favorite phrases of "What's up, Bud?" and "How are you, Sis" will long echo in the memories of the Hanes families for years to come. Casey told stories of the past, shared in our present and gave us the future. He leaves to mourn; a daughter, Ruthanne of Lisle, a son, Joseph (Helen) of Chino Valley, AZ; 7 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews scattered across the globe. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter, Ginny Lou Hanes-Roth. An Ash Festival is being planned for September at Ignacio, CO. The Hanes brothers will be honored at the 118th Moore-Hanes reunion this August.
