♥♥♥♥♥♥ MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER ♥♥♥♥♥♥

David was a son of Samuel Veach Hanes and his wife, Mary Cathren Varvel. He married Nancy "Nelle" Catherine Moore a daughter of John Wesley Moore and his wife, Elizabeth Keath. The ceremony took place on November 24, 1895 in Woodland (Iroquois County), Illinois. They had nine children; eight sons and one daughter. David was a farmer and in his later years he was janitor for Papineau (Iroquois County), Illinois school. After their marriage, David and Nelle resided in Papineau; then Wisconsin; and returned to Martinton, Illinois area around 1918. He was living in Martinton area with his wife and younger children; when he took ill in the early part of 1923. The last week in February 1923 the doctors in Kankakee, Illinois sent him to the Sanitarium in Chicago for further medical aid. He was there about a week and then brought to his daughter, Irene's home where he passed away. Growing up was difficult for the family, they had little of the comforts of life. They did have closeness of family, with tons of love and affection. There were tragedies and triumphs that made for numerous family memories; which became family stories that are now passed from generation to generation.
