[The following obituary was printed in the Wooden Family book, by Dorothy Sykes, Jennie Opal Kleitz O’Roark, Herb Wooden, published by Cole’s Graphic Arts:]

Ephraim Jefferson Wooden was born in Carroll County August 12th, 1844 and died at his home, six miles N.W. of Coloma, Missouri, March 13th, 1907. He was married August 22, 1866, to Laura Ann Marple. To this union 11 children were born, 5 boys and 6 girls. This was indeed a very unfortunate family, seven of the children having preceded their father to their reward.

He united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the year 1889, and the last days of this life maintained his belief and faith in the omnipotent one who called him home.

Mr. Wooden was honest straight forward and energetic, always ready to help fallen or suffering humanity, and helped to make the world brighter wherever he was found. In the death of this man Carroll County feels the loss of one of her best citizens, his neighbors true friend, the children a kind and affectionate father and the wife a loving husband, He was a good man, a splendid Christian whose life would prove his claims. What more need be said to tell of the esteem in which he was held by all who know him.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ragen, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Marple Cemetery.

Jeff, as he was called, was feeding cattle, throwing corn fodder from a sled, when he slipped and fell on the sled standard. He fractured some ribs and punctured one lung. He had a team of oxen hitched to the sled. He died about two years later and it was thought that his death was caused from this injury.

He was very religious and the family went to church every Sunday. The rest of the day was spent singing religious songs and praying, no work whatever on Sunday.
